Demographic Data
The Greater Lowell region consists of the City of Lowell and its eight suburbs - Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, and Westford. The City serves as the economic center of the region which has a land area of approximately 196 square miles and an inland water area of 5.76 square miles. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Greater Lowell region had a population of 310,009 in 2020, which represents an increase of 8.0% since 2010. Housing Units and Density by Community
The total number of housing units in the region increased from 109,446 units in 2010 to 117,872 units in 2020, an increase of 7.7%. 2000, 2010 and 2020 housing data can be found for each community and the region on the Housing Units and Density by Community table.
Commuting Patterns by Community
The suburban communities in the Greater Lowell region have been impacted by many of the issues affecting the City of Lowell, including increased development, traffic and congestion. There is significant crossover traffic across the New Hampshire state line for employment and consumer purposes. The Commuting Patterns by Community table shows the percentage of residents working both inside and outside of Middlesex County and the State according to the 2009-2013 ACS 5-Year estimates. The Towns of Dunstable, Pepperell, and Tyngsborough contain the largest percentages of residents who work out of state, which is not surprising given their close proximity to New Hampshire. The town of Tewksbury contains the largest percentage of residents who work within Massachusetts but outside of Middlesex county (24.4%).
U.S. Census 2022 population estimates for Northern Middlesex communities communities were released May 18, 2023 by the UMass Amherst Donahue Institute. The estimates are based on county-level household population estimates distributed to each city and town based on housing units and group quarters populations.
